🎉 Congrats on being a great parront and getting your pet help! 🎉
Severe feather pluckers are birds that have been plucking for some time and usually have large affected areas. They have developed a compulsive habit of plucking but with a dedicated routine, you can usually turn the problem around in about 12 - 18 months by following our 3 point system shown above.
You took this test because you’re a great caretaker, who is concerned for the well-being of your feathered friend! So I'm pretty sure that you’ll do everything you can to make sure your bird quits plucking. I’ll be here for you each step of the way.
But, keep in mind, that plucking has become a way of coping with stress so it will be important to really work on all 3 steps. Also, some birds that have been plucking for a while have incurred some feather follicle damage and they may not be able to grow all of their feathers back.
⚕️Just a quick reminder... ⚕️
Sometimes a feather plucking is due to a medical issue. So, if your bird hasn't been to the vet for a wellness exam in the last 6 - 12 months, please schedule an appointment as soon as you can. The vet will do an exam to make sure all systems are operating properly.
Severe feather pluckers have developed a compulsive habit so they need a thick, sturdy bird collar to protect them. Plus, they need help accepting the collar.
Download my FREE guide on how to help your bird accept a bird collar below. Also, spray the collar with a bitter tasting spray and consider using moleskin to fortify the Velcro closure.
Your goal at this stage is to interrupt the habit while you work on long-term solutions for changing plucking behavior.

There’s no better way to turn around challenging bird behavior then to focus on bird wellness so that your bird lives longer, has increased vitality, and thrives.
Animal trainers have long known that positive reinforcement is critical to turning around challenging behaviors. Learn what events trigger a plucking episode. Also, concentrate on teaching new behaviors and rewarding the heck out of them when your bird does new behaviors.
