🎉 Congrats on being a great parrot ambassador and rescuing a bird! 🎉
Each year thousands of parrots are surrendered. Many have survived terrible situations leaving them in ill health and scared. Many turn to plucking as a way to cope.
With proper care, most rescued birds can and do recover from neglect and abuse.
⚕️First things first... ⚕️
Rescued birds have often been neglected and, in some cases, even abused, so a good health checkup is in order.
If your bird has never worn a collar before and it doesn't have open injuries, put collaring on the back burner for the time being. A collar could be too frightening for the bird and introducing it may affect the bonding process.
With tender loving care a lot of rescues regain their beautiful plummage in 6-24 months.
We all want our feathered friends lived long, happy, healthy lives. Now that you’ve rescued your bird, it's a great time give it the nourishment, training, and enrichment that it needs to thrive.
Were you aware that research shows that improving wellness has a dramatic effect on improving unwanted behaviors, too?
A great place to start is with the Parrot Feather Plucking Rescue Pack.
In addition to improving parrot wellness, learn to use positive reinforcement. This is when you intentionally "reward" behaviors that you want to see more of and refrain from rewarding behaviors that are unhealthy for your bird. The keyword here is intentional. Make a plan in writing.
